A request of the Ann Reinkings Choreography Fellow Niani Feelings to write a piece about the imagined past of Gran Mimi from Jelly's Last Jam as a rich Creole woman who has bought her mother out of slavery. Optimistically trying to convince herself and her mother that things will be better now, she still has to contend with the racism and discrimination of America in the 1800's.
